Fusobacteria are rod-shaped bacilli of the genius Fusobacterium. It is capable of thriving in anaerobic conditions. Fusobacteria are a genus of bacteria categorized as gram negative with similarities to Bacteroides. However, in contrast to Bacteroides, Fusobacterium have a potent lipopolysaccharide that can function as an endotoxin.The Fusobacterium are associated with infection and disease including periodontal diseases, topical skin ulcers and Lemierres's syndrome. Lemierres's syndrome causes a sore throat that results in pus pockets on the tonsils. The diseases attributed to Fusobacterium infection involve symptoms that include tissue necrosis, septicema, intra-amniotic infections and ulcers. They not only flourish in these tissues, but easily flit about on other cells to similar vacation spots around the body accounting for the spread of their acidic toxins, at times arousing havoc with tumors, polyps, cysts and other harmless masses of tissue.
