Question: We need to move from stereotypes to knowledge when discussing human rights and in particular poverty and hunger. Firstly because stereotypes can harm dignity, like discussed in the video shown today. It gives a preconceived image to something or someone that may be hard to change. In the video black children were shown to be in poverty and hunger and a white women came to the country to help fix the situation. The stereotypes in this video implied that people in poverty and hunger are from Africa and that people that are there to help are white people. This stereotype can be harmful to peoples dignity because obviously not everyone in Africa lives in poverty and hunger and not everyone experiencing these issues are black as well. this video can be related back to what we talked about in class. firstly ethnocentrism is viewing other cultures from the perspective of your own. When airing commercials about helping third world countries it perpetuates that western culture is more advanced and that other places like Africa are underdeveloped and in need of saving. Another class topic that can be related to the video is the victim and saviour ideology. The "victim" is usually seen as non-white and in need of saving and the "saviour" is usually seen as white and there to save others. this can be seen in the short video we watched, the children are portrayed as the victims that are hungry and living in poverty and the white women are shown to have come to the country to "bond", "be a mother figure" and "save" these kids from there circumstances. These are obvious stereotypes that have been perpetuated over time that are harmful to people's identities and push the idea that western cultures are more developed. Everyone else is in need of saving them. the reason we need to move from stereotypes into knowledge when discussing issues like these is that firstly, non-western cultures are just as developed but they are labelled as not because they do not follow western standards and the idea that western countries live in wealth and good health is not always the case, lastly, non-western cultures are not looking for the saving grace of white people lol, we should be focused more on fixing our own issues than stereotyping and fixing others.
