Case: Did you find it easy to make confident and decisive decisions with several strongly agree or strongly disagree answers, or did you select mostly moderate responses?
It was easy for me to make a confident and decisive decisions with several strongly agree or strongly disagree answers. This is because in my opinion, several of the inquiries required a focus on the patient's best interests and protection. When making a decision in the healthcare setting it is important to consider the patients right to autonomy in or order to ensure patient satisfaction. Therefore, patient's interest was the determining point and since I knew that it was easy for me to make choices with certainty. Making a choice without prejudice might be challenging, but I always try to encourage my patients to do what they think is in their best interest.
Did any subject areas trigger personal emotions or issues? If so, do
you feel you were able to remain objective?
For me, Question 2 elicited strong feelings of emotion and anger. This is because I do not understand how someone who has decided to work in a sensitive environment can make decisions like recommending sterilization based on a person's race or socioeconomic situation. Those involved in these practices have no place in the medical field since they do not consider all humans to be of equal worth. Healthcare providers should not discriminate against patient's. In this case, I can no longer claim objectivity; the decision made elicited emotional reactions. Still, it is legitimate to declare that the action taken was unfair.
Did you rely on policy or legal parameters to make your decisions?
Yes, I do use policy or legal limits as part of my decision-making process when I'm in a healthcare context. While making a choice, we will always be protected by policy. For instance, In Question 3, the nurse should have followed the ANA code of ethics and reported her worries about the police officer even if she lacked sufficient proof to do so.
Would you be comfortable making your answers to the survey public,
or do you prefer anonymity?
I would be comfortable making my answers to the survey public because I believe that my answers are unbiased and they would not cause conflict among members of the public.
