Question: A team of paleontologists examines the fossils of marine bivalves recovered from a Permian layer of sediments. In the same excavation, a few fossils dating from the period that followed, the Triassic, were also discovered. The layer from the Permian yielded over 100 shells in 20 different sizes and patterns. The Triassic layer yielded five small shells of a single type. Based on this information, make a hypothesis about the findings.
