1. Education is a major social institution and agent of socialization. Using the sociological concepts theories presented in this week’s reading, analyze the hypothesis that education performs important functions for the stability of society. What functions does education serve? Which function is most important, and why?

2. Sociologists have differing perspectives on the role of education as a social institution, just as they have differing perspectives on the role of religion. One issue that ties the two together is the debate over prayer in public schools. Please re-read “Religion in the Schools” and respond to the 2 questions below:
