Question: Mary Hendricks, a 72-year-old Caucasian female, arrived yesterday in the Emergency Department with reports of chest pain and difficulty breathing. Mary reported a 50+ year history of smoking one pack of cigarettes a day and chronic high blood pressure. While she was in the ED, Mary was diagnosed with a heart attack (myocardial infarction). Mary was admitted to the telemetry floor of the hospital, and her telemetry monitor has continued to show a pattern of slowed conduction through the heart, resulting in an abnormally low heart rate of 45 beats per minute.
