Jane Doe was charged by the state government with the criminal offense of murder of her husband. She was also sued in a civil lawsuit for wrongful death by the mother of her husband. In the criminal case, the trial court's verdict was "not guilty" resulting in an acquittal of Jane Doe for the murder of her husband. However, she was found liable for the death of her husband and forced to pay money damages to the mother of her deceased husband.

Social media, including the press throughout the United States started writing that justice had finally been served because Jane Doe was finally proven "guilty" referring to the civil wrongful death case. As a critical thinking reporter, you attempt to help the public understand Jane Doe's civil case and the criminal case by answering the following critical thinking questions (Lee, n.d., "Topic 1: The Fundamentals of Law in America"):

(1) Was Jane Doe ever proven "guilty"?

(2) How could Jane Does win the civil case but lose the criminal case?

(3) What are some of the major differences between civil law and criminal law and why are the differences critical to companies engaging in commerce, intrastate, interstate, and internationally?
