Assignment:

1. Recidivism has been a major concern for criminal justice practitioners, politicians, and society. Our system is based largely on the deterrence model that suggests if a person's costs (punishment) outweigh the benefits of their act (crime) they will not reoffend. The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), along with other sources, provide us data on reoffending rates. As this is a course on offender reentry, reintegration and recidivism, our first assignment will look at the most recent data available from the BJS on recidivism. This is the longest follow-up period that the BJS has conducted a recidivism study (9-years) and one of the longest follow-up periods overall. This report will present rates, raw numbers and percentages - make sure you read the question carefully so that you provide what is being asked in the question. Please use the link provided for the 2018 update on Prisoner Recidivism: A 9-Year Follow-up Period (2005-2014) by Alper, Durose, and Markman to answer the following questions: 
   1. Among the state prisoners released in 2005 across 30 states, what percentage were arrested at least once in the 9-years following their release?
   2. What percent of prisoners arrested during the 9-year follow-up were arrested within the first 3-years of release?
   3. What type of offenders were most likely to be rearrested?
   4. What percent of male offenders and what percent of female offenders were rearrested within 9-years (you can round up or down)?
   5. What age group had the highest arrests in the 9-year period?
   6. What is the estimated percentage of released prisoners who were responsible for half of the nearly 2 million arrests that occurred during the 9-year follow-up period?
   7. While recidivism studies are rarely more than 3-years due to a variety of reasons including the need for timely information, longer follow-up period do provide us more accurate information. To that end, the study examined the extent of desistance over time. Provide the percent of released prisons that had NOT been arrested within the first 3-years; the percent not arrested when looking at 6 years out and finally what was the percent NOT arrested 9-years following release?
   8. What percent of offenders were arrested out of state from the state of their original crime and incarceration over the 9-years follow-up?
   9. What percent of released drug offenders were arrested for non-drug crimes within 9-years following release?
   10. Reviewing the most recent and longest follow-up study of recidivism by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, what surprised you the most and why? You must be specific and thorough in your explanation to receive full credit.
