4. In the Hellenistic world, the new language and culture of the elites was Greek. In many places Greek-speaking rulers, soldiers, and colonists formed the upper classes. The native populations of the lands that came under the rule of Greek-speaking kings were faced with a choice: adopt Greek culture and Hellenize (Hellene being the Greek word for "Greek"), or resist the influence of Hellenistic Greek culture?

What choices did different peoples in the Hellenistic world make? In particular, we will focus on the Israelites/Jews in a few weeks, and how rabbinic Judaism and Christianity developed out of the complicated tensions between Hellenization and resistance to Hellenization.
