Questions

1. How did the "Hellenistic" kings who followed Alexander build on the social, political, cultural and economic traditions of Classical Greece? Where did their ideas diverge from these "Classical" traditions? What were the characteristics of Hellenistic states and societies?

2. Was Alexander III of Macedon truly "great"? How did he conquer much of the Mediterranean and Near East? What were his short and long term impacts on these regions?

3. What were the major artistic trends of the Hellenistic period? How were they shaped by the contact between Greek culture and the wider world?

4. In the Hellenistic world, the new language and culture of the elites was Greek. In many places Greek-speaking rulers, soldiers, and colonists formed the upper classes. The native populations of the lands that came under the rule of Greek-speaking kings were faced with a choice: adopt Greek culture and Hellenize (Hellene being the Greek word for "Greek"), or resist the influence of Hellenistic Greek culture?

What choices did different peoples in the Hellenistic world make? In particular, we will focus on the Israelites/Jews in a few weeks, and how rabbinic Judaism and Christianity developed out of the complicated tensions between Hellenization and resistance to Hellenization.
