A roof-cooling system, which operates by maintaining a thin film of water on the roof surface, may be used to reduce air-conditioning costs or to maintain a cooler environment in non-conditioned buildings. To determine the effectiveness of such a system, consider a sheet metal roof for which the solar absorptivity as is 0.50 and the hemispherical emissivity e is 0.3. Representative conditions correspond to a surface convection coefficient h of 20 W/m2 · K, a solar irradiation G s of 700 W/m2, a sky temperature of - 10°C, an atmospheric temperature of 30°C, and a relative humidity of 65%. The roof may be assumed to be well insulated from below. Determine the roof surface temperature without the water film. Assuming the film and roof surface temperatures to be equal, determine the surface temperature with the film. The solar absorptivity and the hemispherical emissivity of the film-surface combination are aS = 0.8 and e = 0.9, respectively.
(a) Determine the magnitude of the projected components of F acting parallel Fp and normal Fn to line OA. (b) Express these components Fp and Fn in Cartesian vector notation.
A HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter is monitored periodically for replacement. Specifications state that if the pressure drop across the filter exceeds 1 inch of water, the filter should be replaced.
A permeation membrane separates an inlet air stream (79 mol% N2, 21 mol% O2) into a permeate stream and a reject stream. The inlet stream conditions are 293K, 0.5 MPa and 2 mol/min; the conditions for both outlet streams are 293 K and 0.1 MPa.

A manometer is used to measure the pressure difference between points A and B in a pipe. Water flows in the pipe, and the specific gravity of the manometer fluid is 2.8. The distances and manometer deflection are indicated.
Earth whose in situ weight is 110 lb per cf and compacted weight is 124 lb per cf is placed ina a fill at rate of 280 cy per hr, measured as compacted earth. The thickness of the compacted layers is 8 in
a tower is surrounded by a wall that is 10 m high and 30 m away from the base of the tower. compute the length of the shortest ladder that can stand outside the wall and lean against the tower.
