Carbohydrates are essential nutrients for our diets. The main function of carbohydrates are to provide energy to the body. Carbohydrates can be found in healthy foods such as fruits, grains, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Carbohydrates can also be found in unhealthy foods as well. These foods are pasta and bread. Carbohydrates are classified into three categories: sugar, starch and fiber. There are both simple and complex carbohydrates. Sugar, the simplest form is in foods such as fructose and lactose. Starch is a complex carbohydrate and can be found in vegetables and beans. Fiber is also in complex carbohydrates. It is found in more plant-based foods. Although carbohydrates can be viewed negatively, they are actually important sources of energy for our bodies. They also provide important nutrients. As much as it is important to consume carbohydrates, it is important to maintain the daily amount you consume. Too many carbohydrates can lead to weight gain, while just the right amount can help with weight loss.
