A 1.0 cm block weighing 10 kg is placed in a gap 6.0 cm wide and is attached to two springs, as shown above. The left spring has a spring constant kL = 2 N/cm, the right spring has a spring constant kR = 4 N/cm, and both springs have equilibrium lengths of 1.0 cm. You may also neglect any friction in this problem.

(a) If the left spring is stretched to a length of x cm, what is the length of the right spring?

(b) What is the magnitude and direction of the force exerted by the left spring on the block? Your answer may include the unknown x.

(c) What is the magnitude and direction of the force exerted by the right spring on the block? Answer: 4(4 - x) N to the right.

(d) Where is the block, i.e. what is x, when the system is at equilibrium?
