Question

While meeting with a reporter, Professor Hayes is interrupted by some of his students, who show him "magnetic pulses" spiking along the San Andreas fault. Professor Hayes breaks out a Sharpie and starts drawing a new hypothetical plate boundary connecting the San Andreas to the Hoover Dam. The boundary randomly crosses several mountain ranges, and doesn't seem to show any topographical patterns. If you were one of Professor Hayes' grad students (or the reporter), what would you say to Professor Hayes about his hypothesis? Why?
