In "Magical Realism as Post-Colonial Discourse," Stephen Slemon writes: "As Robert Kroetsch and Linda Kenyon observe, magic realism as a literary practice seems to be closely linked with a perception of "living on the margins," encoding within it, perhaps, a concept of resistance to the massive imperial centre and itstotalizing systems" (10). In other words, magical realism as a genre takes dominant culture and disrupts it in some way as a form of political action. 

Think of an example of art (writing, music, visual art, video games, etc.; whether magical realist or not) that does this, and then explain how this work of art takes dominant culture and disrupts it. For example, the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat used grafitti techniques in his paintings to "disrupt" art culture in the 1980s. Make sure to describe the work of art and then how it disrupts dominant culture in some way. Then answer the following questions: If you believe this work of art is a form of political action, do you think it led to lasting cultural change? Why or why not?
