Kathryn Michels is a stay-at-home mom in her mid-thirties. She has toddlers keeps her busy. Since her pregnancies, her weight has slowly but children, one 4-year old boy and one 2-year old girl. Liver cirrhosis from alcohol abuse is one of the ten leading causes of death in the United States. Between 10% and 15% of gradually increased. She is approximately 30 pounds heavier now than before she had her first pregnancy. She knows she should do something to control her weight, but doesn't seem to know what to do except to eat less. On a regular annual checkup with her physician, a blood test revealed that her cholesterol was 225 mg/100 mL, which is above a desirable level. Her LDL-cholesterol was elevated (110 mg/100 mL) and her HDL-cholesterol levels were low (40 mg /100 mL). Her physician recommended that she diet and begin an exercise program, and if these measures were unsuccessful she would have to begin taking medication, such as a statin, to lower her blood cholesterol. Kathryn was very nervous about taking medications for almost all maladies. Kathryn wanted to implement a diet specifically that would lower her blood cholesterol. Her physician handed her a number of information pamphlets for her to read on various diets and sources where she could obtain more related information. After reading the information and doing some research on the type of dietary changes are most effective. Kathryn was a bit confused as Internet, she discovered a lot of conflicting information about which she researched recommendations as there was a lot of differences between the various diets. Some suggestions simply didn't appear logical.

Some online sources stated that she should reduce carbohydrates; others indicated that she should eat a very low-fat diet. Yet others suggested that she should change the type of fats and carbohydrates she consumes.

High-protein diets were emphasized in another diet. Kathryn is not sure which suggestions are best for someone in her situation.
