As a counselor, would you prefer to work for a treatment agency that allows clients to be on long-term maintenance medications or one that used an abstinence-based model? What factors would affect your decision?

Heroin is widely used in the United States today. Increasingly, people attempting to recover from heroin addictions are utilizing maintenance medications like Methadone and Suboxone. Supporters of medication assisted treatment (MAT) argue that people will be able to lead full and productive lives, free of addiction and related harm, with the utilization of these medications. Others contend that continued usage of any drug is still addiction and highlight the difficulty in identifying those who misuse or abuse maintenance medications as well as the challenges individuals on maintenance medications may face at mutual support meetings.
