Question

Roger is a nursing assistant in a long-term care facility. He follows the traditional scientific (Western) approach to health care. While he is not opposed to residents at the facility practicing yoga or massage, he firmly believes these practices can in no way replace the scientific approach. One of his residents, Mrs. Murphy, is an adherent of reiki for healing. Following a back injury, Mrs. Murphy refuses pain relievers, muscle relaxants, and physical therapy and instead books extra sessions with her reiki practitioner. Her physician has approved this plan. What response should Roger give Mrs. Murphy based on this health care decision?

a. Suggest that she try the scientific practices in conjunction with her alternative therapy

b. Listen to Mrs. Murphy's concerns and reasoning and support her in her choice

c. Insist that Mrs. Murphy combine her practice with the scientific approach and take recommended medications
