Act a consultant engaged by a local authority of some sort to prepare a report on how it might go about creating a collection on something that has local historical significance. Choose something that exists in a local area. It might be almost anything that has a history in a locality which has not already been closely researched and documented. For example, it might be a building such as a hotel, house, factory, school, picture theatre, shop or shopping centre. Or it may be a local organisation such a service club, sporting club, gardening club or a well established group such as a quilting group. Or it may be something else such as a public swimming pool, community garden, sculpture, park, farm, or a natural feature. It does not necessarily need to be old, it could be something that has come into existence fairly recently and is gaining historical significance. Don't have to tell the history of what you have chosen, although some will obviously come out in the first part of your report. The focus is on reporting how a collection might be created on that physical entity or organisation (referred to from here as the 'landmark').
Background and significance assessment
1. How does the landmark fit into the community and why is it significant to that community.
2. What further information about the landmark needs to be gathered to, as fully as possible, demonstrate its significance to and place in the community, and provide the information that could be used to write a history of that landmark.
3. The sorts of material that might contain this information.
4. How the proposed collection could be effectively developed.
5. How the proposed collection could be made readily accessible to the public, including description of materials in the collection.
6. The preservation issues pertinent to the material that could be acquired for the proposed collection and how those issues might be practically addressed.
7. How the collection might be promoted to, and engage with the community.
8. Ideas with regard to funding, including relevant grants that could be applied for, and support that could be obtained, such as volunteers.
9. How the collection could be effectively managed, including what policy documents should be devised to guide the development and use of the proposed collection.
