There are several sections of a unit load warehouse in which pallets are loaded on a single line of gravity fed flow racks. These are simply a long bed of rollers in a steel frame with one end slightly inclined. Pallets are placed on higher end and they gently move downhill unit they contact the other end of the rack or a pallet. Pallets are picked from the low end so, when one is picked, gravity moves the ones that are behind it towards the low end by one pallet position.

a) Your task is to modify block storage model 1 for this situation. The bottom line is that the only differences are:

i) There are no clearances on the sides because the frame around the rollers defines the clearance.

ii) The entire width of the aisle is allocated to the lane because there is no lane opposite it to “share” the aisle.

b) After you have developed the model, assume the stack height is one and use the continuous approximation with calculus to find the lane depth, x, that minimizes the average amount of floor space required.
