One of the goals of this educational experience is for you to contemplate the role of culture and other factors that impact your identity and the way you view the world around you. This journal submission will give you an opportunity to reflect on and integrate the course material.
This exercise aims to help you understand how your various identities influence and shape the lenses through which you view the world. This knowledge is useful to you as you begin to meet with clients.
Reflect on the questions below:
1. Do you identify as someone living with a visible disability or a non-visible disability (e.g., chronic pain, psychiatric, or learning)?
If no, has your personal or professional life been affected by others with disabilities?
How have your abilities or disability affected your life and opportunities?
2. What were some of the messages or cultural scripts you heard growing up regarding disabilities?
3. If you identify as a dominant group member (able-bodied), what privileges do you experience as a member of this group?
4. If you identify as a target group (someone living with a visible or a non-visible disability), how does this affect your daily routines, interactions, or access?
