Assessment task
Title: Research and evaluation
BACK WITH DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
- Engage with current literature
- Beware of Itechnocentrisms
- Be aware of time and change
- Look carefully for bias and conflicts of interest in 'research'
- Look to multiple sources
- Look to multiple perspectives
Description: Select a topic associated with research and evaluation that is a current focus in educational technology (e.g., online community development; mobile learning, social networking, training of remote professionals, security etc.). Perform a literature search to identify a range of academic research or evaluation studies that inform or are related to your topic. The studies should refer to qualitative and or quantitative data.
The intent of this task is to engage you with current research literature in the area of educational technology. If you notice, you are asked to find a minimum of 10 articles in a chosen topic area. You will then choose 4 of those articles to annotate. The four points you are being asked to address in the annotations are in the task description.
You should choose a topic you are interested in and is potentially useful for your work, it will make the task much easier. I would expect the 10 articles you are using to be referenced at some point in your Introduction. You can double-up the citations. You can use the articles we have used in this course. If you choose to use any of articles from the subject in the annotated list I will expect the summaries for these articles to be very in-depth, as we have already used them in class.
Your assignment will include:
1. A minimum of 10 sources to include in a reference list
2. A fully referenced introduction to the topic you are addressing
3. Four annotated sources, including:
4. Why you have chosen this article, e.g. highly cited, innovative, referred to in other work, etc.
5. A concise summary of the central theme of the article
6. A concise summary of what was done, what was found - the purpose of the study, methodology (design, participants, setting, analysis), results, conclusion
7. A comparison to other work you have cited
8. An explanation of how this particular work informs the topic.
You also complete a Peer Review which will be addressed in M3T3. The Peer Review will take place in Week 11. It is intended to help your group members finalize their assignment. This portion of the task is not included in the rubric. It is marked on participation only.
You are to present your work as a digital resource, e.g. in a wiki, a blog, a website, online slides or other document or a similar media. Please see the following samples to see how to organize your presentation (Note. These are only suggestions, feel free to modify):
• Blog (using Blogger -- see basic template layout for the assessment here)
• Website (using Webs, Yola, or similiar)
• Wiki (using Wikispaces)
• Google Doc or Slides
• Slideshare
A sample structure for your assessment is:
Summary
This should provide an Introduction and description of your theme or topic. It should provide an overview of your analysis of what you have learned from the range of sources you have read. This overview should also include implications for practice in educational settings (~500 words). It may include a Conclusion, but you could also do this as a separate section after the Annotations (possibly ~200 words of the 500).
Annotations
This should include your 4 annotated sources. For each source provide the annotation criteria listed above. (4X~300-400 words).
References
This page should include a minimum of 10 relevant academic references you identified during your search. You may have more.
Length: 2000 words (or equivalent) + peer-review
