Task Overview and Instructions
Purpose:
The purpose of this report is to solve a business problem using a theoretical framework informed by academic journal articles. Using academic journal articles, you will provide information regarding the business problem and offer potential explanations for the issues. Using what you have learned in the lectures and tutorials,you will identify the source of the business problems. You will then make recommendations based on the literature and theory to the CEO of the company. This will give you transferrable skills to your future jobs and let you practice creating the first part of a business report.
In short:
This is a business report. You, the researcher, have talked to the organisation. You uncovered the business problem and wrote about it in the introduction of the report. You then conducted a literature review to see what academic studies say about the business problem. The literature review also includes Job Demand Resource Theory as a perspective about the business problem. Using the theory and the literature you will propose a research question which you will answer in the discussion. The business report then needs to conclude with recommendations based on the literature and theory. Note this is a timeline of events so the recommendations should not appear before the discussion section.
Topic information: Job stress
You are creating a business report for "Heads up". They have come up with some resources for small business owners and would like to add a report to their website concerning Job stress and Wellbeing.
The CEO of "Heads up" has hired you to conduct a literature review which overviews the topic of stress and what theory has to say about this issue. This is an example of basic business research.
The literature review needs to cover small business owners stress and wellbeing.You need to present JD-R theory as an explanation of these issues. Think about the resources and demands that small business owners would have. You will then write a research question based on this issue and provide some solutions in the discussion section. In the discussion section the solutions you present will need to be informed by both theory and the literature.
It is a good idea to narrow stress (IV) down to a specific type of stress, for example role overload, as there are many types of stress as you will see once you start your literature review.If you are unsure email your lecturer/tutor. Then the outcome should be mental wellbeing (DV).
Theory: Job demand Resources theory (JD-R)
The Report Structure must be:
• Cover page/Title Page - Name, student number, tutor name/day/time, word count
• Executive summary (no longer than one page) - overview the purpose, the issues of stress, most important findings in summary, most important conclusions and recommendations. (Look at how journal articles write an abstract as this is similar.)
• Table of contents (should also include a list of figures / tables if used)
• Report purpose - Introduction(estimated 150-200 words):
o Overview of the business problems
» Introduce the company that hired you and what it does
» Provide a statement of what the small business owners problems would be (see lecture 1-3 on how to do this properly) - this should link to the table in the literature review
• Overview of literature on the topic (Estimated 1,000-1,200 words):
» Include a table which outlines: Small business owners' situations/issues, Symptoms, Likely Problems, and a Decision statement.
» Write a literature review that overviews what previous empirical work (journal articles) has found regarding the topic - see the lecture on literature reviews week 3.
» Overview the theory you will use to investigate the business problems (again see lecture 3):
• Overview the theory and explain the concepts and elements of the theory
• Justify why this theory helps to explain the problems
• Show the rest of the table with the managerial decision statement and corresponding research objectives and research questions based on the theory and literature.
• Do not include any results / recommendations in this section
» End with a research question that will be answered in the discussion section
• Discussion and Recommendations (Estimated 500-600 words):
o Based on the literature and theory give the CEO some recommendations for small business owners. This must link to the academic literature and theory from the introduction. You should also present the answer to your research question.
• List of references - either APA or Harvard (choose one and be consistent)
