Project: Literature Review Paper
Literature Review
The final paper should be in the form of a research paper. A literature review paper is not a simple collection of summaries of related materials (Do not summarize articles one by one). It is a paper that is written to introduce a specific topic of interest (your argument) and a critical analysis of existing literature for the topic. You will develop a position (argument, thesis statement) about your topic. The position is supported by informational literature, evidence from previous research studies, and other experts' arguments, not by your opinion and personal experiences.
To provide a rationale for your position (why this topic is important to study) and to introduce the necessary background information for the context of your argument, existing literature must be critically evaluated, synthesized and logically organized into a paper. The paper needs to show your understanding of the topic and to present the position clearly and effectively. Existing literature needs to be summarized and rewritten with your own words. Direct quotes need to be used only sparingly. For further information about how to write literature reviews, see
Instruction for the Final Paper
The final paper needs to be prepared using word processing software. Recommended format is 12 font size, Times New Roman font style, 1-inch margins (default setting) and double -spaced. The length of the paper should be 10 pages. I am more concerned with quality than quantity. The paper is due on May 5, 2021.
The paper should adhere to either the APA style manual (commonly used citation style in Social Sciences) or the Chicago Manual (commonly used in Humanities).
• You can use a software program to manage citations, such as EndNote, Zotero, or reference tool provided in MS Word.
• Using these tools may take a little time in the beginning because you need to get familiar with their functions, but it will save much time later when formatting the reference list. There is no limit on the number of sources. The number of sources will depend on the types of sources you are citing (books, articles, theses, etc.), and your topic. However, if you need to write a 10-page paper to evaluate the
literature comprehensively for a certain topic, you can't do it with just several sources.
• Do not re-cite unless you cannot find the original source. Re-citing is when you cite a work that you didn't read yourself but read about it from another work.
Instruction for the Presentation
Once you have written the paper, you will present it to the class. Since we are an online community, we will present our papers through video tools. There is an additional instruction how to create a video and share it to the class.
The presentation should be around 5 minutes. You can use Power Point Slides and have your voice over to the file. You can just come up to a camera and present the paper with your index cards. You can stand in front of a white board and explain your paper with a marker (and record what you do). The format of presentation is
free and up to you. In your presentation, you need to effectively deliver the content of your paper. It is a good idea to create a plan (perhaps with scripts) about how you will unfold your presentation before recording.
In addition to your own presentation, you need to make constructive comments on our classmates' presentations. You should make at least TWO comments (or questions) in other presentations that are of interest to you.
