The image chosen for this asset is a film still photograph from the 2016 film "Me Before You" which is a adapted from the novel by Jojo Moyes, of the same name, shows that it is one of the many novels which feature characters with disabilities, but unfortunately, a lot of them rely on damaging stereotypes that perpetuate negative attitudes towards disabled people. Instead of portraying disabled characters with the same depth and complexity as other characters, they often resort to either a tragedy narrative where the character dies at the end, or a narrative where the character miraculously recovers or it's revealed that their disability was fake all along.

In this video called "HOW YOU SEE ME" it talks about many forms of different types of disability representation this video is important because it shows the many variety of individual who have different types of disabilities and brings awareness in there disability showing us there story in beginning of the video we see a woman in a wheelchair have a spinal cord injury and the next wee see a women who is deaf and sign languages she says talks about how she knew she was different and the third talks about a woman who was born with spina bifida in a wheelchair so she been paralyzed her whole life and adapting to accept it and the fifth is a girl who is disabled from her legs she talks about this being her biggest insecurity is her legs so she turned her biggest insecurity into a business idea with jeans and her advertisement on her legs in her jean line showing that when she realized it's ok to be different in accepting it because embracement can lead to a different perspective in how you see yourself and in live. This video shows that it's better to accept yourself than try to change yourself and adapt and accept to be the best person you can be in how you feel and within your life.

Article

For my article I decided to choose one that discusses disability representation in children's books. The article states, "According to the Cooperative Children's Book Center's 2019 study, only 3.4% of children's books have disabled main characters. Compare this statistic with the CDC's finding that 26% of Americans have disabilities." This was shocking to read because I thought children's books were more diverse. Literary representation of disability is very important especially in children's books because they will learn young about how people with disabilities are not "abnormal" and that they are just a person. Diversity in books is crucial so kids can see themselves represented in what they read. Tobin Siebers argues that we need to look beyond the social constructions that we have formed and challenge them.

Using the Asset Library, research the images, videos, and articles that you and your classmates have posted to create a whiteboard that demonstrates the argument that you'd like to make about the research question.
