Literary Criticism and Robert Lewis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Choose from the following two essay options for your final essay.

1. Write a 5-page paper synthesizing three critiques (of your choice) from our Norton Critical edition of Robert Lewis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to analyze the work's lasting impact on Western literature. It is important to set the work in its literary period and social context. Include discussion on themes of Victorian literature and how Jekyll and Hyde fits into that tradition. (The preface to our edition should be a first step in this research.) As always, literary terms that are applicable to this novella will be part of your essay, often impacting essay organization. However, how you organize is up to you in our final essay. Use key words in this prompt to craft your thesis and thereby organize your essay.

Keep an eye out for Victorian theme as expected and theme that varies from the norm (if so), as not all Victorian literature fits neatly into that category. For instance, the Bronte sister's Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre are characteristically Romantic through they were written in the Victorian period. One consideration: is this a God vs. Science horror story about the collective unconscious anxiety of scientific progress during Victorian times, or might it be a cautionary tale warning that man should not play God? What else might be going on in the story?
