Listening transcends differences, bridging separateness. Various research has shown that the physician-patient relationship improves tremendously when the physician practices quality listening. This is well-displayed in a study by Jagosh, Boudreau, Steinert, MacDonald, and Ingram (2011). In the article, the authors suggested listening provided the ability to gather data, enhanced healing, and strengthened the relationship between the doctor and patient. Listening relies on “our willingness to be open to others, to listen empathetically, to express unconditional positive regard, and to speak authentically” (Mirivel, p. 135). In addition, listening prevents miscommunication. Listeners must be genuine, because active listening is crucial to our relationships.
