Assignment Task: Read the following paper and answer the following questions.
Interspecific hierarchies from aggressiveness and body size among the invasive alien hornet, Vespa velutina nigrithorax, and five native hornets in South Korea by Ohseok Kwon1, Moon Bo ChoiID
1) Based on the information in the Introduction section, list three problems caused by invasive hornets. Which one of these does the Kwon and Choi study investigate?
2) First, explain what the authors mean by interspecific hierarchies. Then, in about a paragraph, describe the study design and explain how it analyzed these interspecific hierarchies.
3) Use the information in Table 1 to explain what Fig. 2 says is happening in confrontations between each pair of species (V. velutinavs. V. simillima, V. velutinavs. V. mandarinia, etc). Which species tends to win or lose, and how bad are the consequences for the loser? Make sure you refer to the score numbers in your response. Does the information in Table 1 and Fig. 2 support the hypothesis that V. velutinais more aggressive or a superior fighter when compared to native Korean hornets? Explain why or why not.
4) Use the information in Figures 3 and 5 to evaluate the hypothesis that hornets with a larger body size generally win fights. Explain how you used the data to evaluate the hypothesis. Does your analysis support the hypothesis completely, partially, or not at all?
5) How fast did V. velutinaspread in Europe and Korea (km/year)? What factors could explain the different rates of spread? Sketch how an invasive hornet species would spread across an island after initially arriving at a single point on the coast. Then, estimate how long it would take for invasive V. velutina to spread all over the island depicted below if the spreading rate (a) is similar to the spreading rate in Europe and (b) is similar to the spreading rate in Korea.
