Kurt Lewin's Force field analysis suggests that every condition we face is affected by countervailing forces. Some factors continually restrain us. Other factors drive us forward. Performance can be increased by first weakening or removing restraining forces, then by strengthening and adding driving forces. Force field analysis helps with brainstorming strategies and developing action plans to strengthen/ minimize driving and restraining forces.

 For this week, I want you to identify your most important academic (OR career) goal.  Using the force field analysis, do the following:

  • List the driving forces that will help you achieve this goal
  • List the restraining issues preventing you from achieving this goal
  • What can you do to maximize your driving forces and minimize your restraining forces to help you get closer to reaching your goal?
  • Explain your personal commitment action plan and share with the class in the discussion
