More importantly, your PLP helps you articulate how your mind works and how that causes you to feel and act in everyday life. Review Section 2.7 from Chapter 2 which describes the process of developing descriptions for your profile.

To overcome obstacles to communication, you must first be mindful of what barriers exist (Baack, 2012). Take for example, gender differences. "Men are more likely to interrupt" (Baack, 2012, section 2.2, para. 7) to make a point, while women are more likely to patiently wait their turn. I know that often in business meetings, I am reluctant to interrupt. I wait for a pause in the conversation, and at that point, sometimes the topic has moved on and my original point becomes irrelevant, so I do not offer it. This doesn't occur all the time, but it has happened on occasion. How do I overcome this specific barrier?

One technique that can be used to improve the likelihood of success in communication is NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) (Mihaela, 2018). According to Mihaela, a key assertion of NLP is: "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got" (Mihaela, 2018, p. 372). Thus, changing one's way of thinking and one's way of interacting with others is critical to excelling in the exchange of ideas and messages with others, whether in the workplace or in education. Part of NLP involves eliminating the negativity of past failures and incorporating past successes into one's communications (Mihaela, 2018).

Thus, in the example of getting my point across during a meeting, does it necessarily mean that I should on occasion, interrupt others? I do not believe that is a requirement for good communication. As an alternative, I could speak up during a pause to say: "Back to the earlier topic..." and then make my point. What are some of your opinions on this?
Regardless, I want to learn more about NLP and how to apply its principles in a practical way.

I have recently hired a new team member who is significantly older than his counterparts. While no one is trying to exclude him from conversations, he often finds himself naturally excluded by the "millennial code" in which they speak. They tend to associate with each other outside of work attending events that appeal more to folks their age. They all sit in cubes in a shared area and make plans by shouting over the cube walls to each other.

Many times in conversation, they make comments about age without the intention of offense, just out of comfort among peers. This is similar to the circumstance outlined in our course text regarding a senior worker feeling unwelcomed my inappropriate age-based jokes (Baack, 2012, Chapter 2.2).

In an effort to quell this breeding ground for tension, I had the desire to pull the younger team members aside for discussion. However, I thought that I needed to be mindful of how this is done. I don't want it to be perceived as a scolding but as a managerial function. So, I chose to have a discussion with everyone (including the senior team member) about personal branding, and when it comes to business, employee branding (Miles & Mangold, 2004, p. 186).

Within this discussion, I will touch upon many issues including but not limited to appropriate language and subject matter discussions in the workplace, and inclusivity. My goal is to address the issue at hand, get them to think more deeply about what they say and how to conduct themselves in the office, while not feeling "singled out" for bad behavior. For at least one, it's her first job and this is the time to learn. For the others, hopefully, a good refresher.

communication skills are wide and deep. From the macro results of avoiding global political conflict through keen negotiation to the more micro benefits of finding the best local restaurants while traveling in a foreign country. These are things that "can be accomplished only when we initiate relationships with people who are different from ourselves" (Neuliep, Ch.1).

I would assess my intercultural communication competence as emerging. That is, I am aware of its importance personally and professionally, and strive to achieve a high level of sensitivity, openness, and awareness of other culture's communication styles. Right now, I often approach intercultural communication situations with an early, transparent and admittedly apologetic admission of my lack of skill, coupledwith communication that I am open to learning more and that all further messages should assume good intent.

Growing these skills is important for anyone looking to make strides in their career. While we have been a global economy for some time, finding talent that is at minimum multi-lingual and at best has mastery of intercultural communication is a needle in a haystack. People who have this experience are in high demand. Baack (2018) illustrates this by confirming that as markets expand so to do the opportunities to do and grow business in other countries. The people who are first to these countries in a way that builds connections on a personal level will see the greatest return.

However, I think the personal benefits are even more powerful. Studies have shown that good intercultural communication skills are correlated to other, positive factors such as increased empathy, willingness to look at issues that challenge the status quo and more comfort in ambiguous situations (Essays, UK, 2018).

My family is from Mexico and I have lived in the United States since the age of 9 months. Over the last 18 years I have had the privilege and honor to work alongside several cultures. My first job out of college I worked for a Japanese company doing work in MN. My second job, I worked for an Italian Company working in OR under two engineers, one French and one Italian. My last boss was Palestinian. In the military, I did a tour in Niger, Africa and worked on a project within the Navajo Reservation in NM. As you can see multicultural communication has played a role in my career.

Starting my career, I went into these multicultural relationships without any real concept or advantage or previous knowledge of the Japanese cultural. The company I worked for was conducting a joint venture with an American company where the staff consisted of half American and half Japanese, again I was the only female engineer on site and quickly understood that the Japanese culture did not have the same interpersonal relationships between males and females.

Working for the Italian company, I speak Italian and had a little knowledge of what the culture was like, however, the animosity towards Americans was apparent when I was told I was okay because I am Mexican and not American. Italians are very progressive, and the male/female relationships were a lot more interactive. The military gives you cultural awareness training before going into a different culture to assure situational awareness. As I have been exposed to these relationships my level of awareness has become more acute and my ability to respond and correct my behavior based on theirs is second nature.

With that being said it is clear that different cultures can result in different situations and communications styles. There can also be ad difference based on the location, whether you are on your personal ground or theirs as well as time within that culture. Communication will most likely become easier with the amount of time spent within that multicultural relationship. (Vaagan, 2016).

One thing that I learned about Week1 was, 25 ways to develop a growth mindset. I found it very interesting because each describes had its own way of explaining how your mindset grows, or helps you to understand how to get it to grow is a better way in putting it. One thing that went well for me was I made a very important breakthrough. I have always been a procrastinator and constantly wait til the last minute on everything.

Well I decided that I was going to change it up and stay ahead of the game. With the25 ways to developing was able to encourage my self to ownership in being a procrastinator and work on doing better and just stop procrastinating. I don't know of anything I need to change from week 1 because I have been so pleased with my outcome so far. And week 2 and beyond I will stay focus and keep in the pace that I am going. Because it's allowing me to sleep better, work better, and spend a lot more time with family. After reading the material I will continue to learn more about developing my mindset.

One thing that went well for me last week was the soft skill assignment, i enjoyed writing that assignment about how it was useful for me in Healthcare administration. Soft skilled help me have a better understanding on how to use them for career and my daily life. Using critical thinking helps me at home as well as with raising three children. I have to able to think smart about raising them to best of my knowledge and abilities.

Even in my job critical thinking is a daily requirement used for the care of my residents and coworkers. The resident are always changing their habits and thought processes with me, using the tools that were presented to me helps me assist the situations at hand. I am able to help and define the issues that are causing their problems and i am able to assist them in the best possible way.

One thing i could have changed and better proceeded last week was trying harder to control myself during the quizzes. I knew the answers but when it came time to complete the quiz i was very hesitant and became confused about the questions that were asked. I had came to the conclusion that i am aware of my frustration from test anxiety is causing my lack of structure and concentration due to the grading procedure on my quizzes. Further noticed, even though i took a continuously pause, and retook my quiz, i haven't succeed to accomplish the task that was given to me. In conclusion, I must find a better outlook of taking my test anxiety away from my concentration and focus at the test and quizzes that i am required to do.
