Problem
You will identify and contact a public health professional. During the consult, you will ask questions about their career and solicit advice on how you might move forward with the degree you earned. The scheduled consultation should last around 30 to 45 minutes. Then tell them about your professional goals, where you see yourself 5 and 10 years from now, and listen to their advice. Ask them questions you have that will help you move forward with your career after graduation.
I. Define your current career goals. This statement should illustrate your interest in the field, salary, benefits, and other requirements. Highlight your interests, what you do and do not want in a job. Consider your work preferences:
i. Telework or on location
ii. Desk or field work
iii. Independent or team work
iv. Nonprofit, for-profit, government, and so on
II. List questions you plan to ask the public health professional during the interview. Consider the following:
i. How did you get started?
ii. What was your career path?
iii. What knowledge and skills are key to being successful in your field?
At the end of the interview, prepare a summary that includes the following:
I. Meeting details:
i. List the name and title of the public health professional.
ii. Provide the date, time, and meeting place (phone call, videoconference, or in-person).
iii. Describe your career goals.
II. Meeting results:
i. Summarize the conversation.
ii. List resources gained during the meeting.
III. Reflection:
i. Discuss what you learned about yourself while completing this assignment.
ii. Discuss plans for the next career steps you will take upon graduation to get yourself where you want to be in 5 or 10 years.
