Case Study 1.

Your client Mavis suffers from severe dementia. Prior to her diagnosis, she participated in many social activities including the country women's group, line dancing and regularly attending church.
After her diagnosis her condition worsened to the point that she could no longer live in her own home and she now lives in an assisted living facility. She regularly forgets what day it is and gets frustrated over her unfamiliarity with time.

Questions:
1. What are three communication strategies you could use in order to gain Mavis's trust and reassure her that this move is a positive one?

2. Describe three ways you could address any possible stigma in relation to Mavis'diagnosis of Dementia.

Case Study 2 - Beth goes for a check up
Beth is your 67-year-old client who you are taking to the GP for a medical check-up. When you arrive at Beth's house to provide Syd (Beth's husband) with some respite, Syd is on the phone and quietly discussing catching up with their daughter. Beth appears to be agitated and confused about who Syd it talking to.
Once Syd hangs up the phone Beth begins arguing and hitting Syd with her hand and then with a newspaper. She begins to accuse him of organising a secret meeting with a lady friend.
When she calms down, Beth appears confused and starts aimlessly wandering in the garden, moving pot plants around and accusing the next door neighbour of stealing them.

Case Study 3 - Peter moves in with his family
After experiencing a number of health problems, Peter (85 years old) has recently sold his unit and moved in with his son Joe and daughter-in-law Alyssa. They live in an up-and-coming suburb just outside of the city. Peter was initially excited about the move as he wanted to help Joe and Alyssa out financially by contributing a small weekly amount to the household in return for care. Joe and Alyssa were going to provide home cooked meals and take him to his medical appointments.
In recent months, Peter has experienced a number of health concerns, including some falls and frequent problems remembering things. Peter's GP believes he is showing signs of dementia.
Lately, Peter has noticed that he is not received his mail as regularly as he did when he lived by himself. Peter asked Joe if he has noticed anything about the missing mail. Joe angrily slams his coffee on the table, causing it to spill and burn Peter's right arm. He angrily tells Peter that when the mail is delivered to the mailbox, he makes sure it's collected and opened and Peter's mail is then always handed to him.
Peter feels uneasy. He feels he is completely capable of dealing with his own mail and does not think that Joe needs to do it for him.
This month Peter has had recurrent falls and he now requires a 4WF and handrails in the bathroom to be fitted. As Joe and Alyssa are having financial difficulties, Joe has advised Peter he cannot afford these at this stage. Alyssa has also returned to full-time work leaving Peter to prepare his own meals. There seems to be minimal food suitable for Peter to prepare for his meals, he feels lonely and isolated, without local transport accessible he is unable to keep up with his social networks and appears to be depressed.

Questions:
