Assignment - Public Health Project
1. What public health problem or controversy do you plan to address in your paper?
2. What motivates you to write about this topic?
3. What populations are affected by this health issue? Are there health inequities (health disparities) related to this health issue?
4. What do you know about the main causes (or risk factors) for this health problem?
5. What approaches to preventing or reducing this health problem are you aware of?
6. What controversies related to these prevention approaches are you aware of?
7. How do you plan to research this topic?
8. List at least two reliable sources you have found and believe will be useful to you in writing about this health challenge.
Directions:
1. State (in a sentence or two) the main idea or thesis of your paper.
2. List at least 6 sources you plan to use for the paper. Instead of general sources like "CDC.gov" or "the library," list specific articles, web pages, books or documentary videos you plan to use. At least half of these sources should be public health publications.
3. Which public health frameworks do you plan to use in your paper? One of the purposes of this assignment is to use public health frameworks and tools to discuss public health problems, so this part is important. Pick one or two frameworks from this list:
- the ecological model or other multi-factor or multi-causation disease models
- the upstream/downstream idea or the 3 levels of prevention
- the 4-step public health approach (CDC)
- the social determinants of health
- the communicable disease model (or epidemiological triangle)
- a historical analysis of how this health problem arose over time
4. Comment briefly on how you plan to use 1 or 2 of these public health concepts or frameworks. You might think about how these frameworks could help you answer the questions below.
5. List the main causes or risk factors for this public health problem.
6. Name a controversy about how to address or prevent this public health problem. Please note, a "controversy" means that there are reasonable arguments and evidence on both sides, although the evidence is often stronger on one side than the other. In public health, often the controversies focus on individual responsibility or individual choice versus public responsibility or the public good. But sometimes the controversy is just about what works (what's effective and efficient).
7. Summarize a couple main arguments of the side you find more convincing in this controversy -- using bullet points or short phrases.
8. Summarize a couple main arguments of an opposing side in this controversy -- using bullet points or short phrases
9. What more do you think should be done to prevent or address this issue? Think about a program or policy that would reduce the risk factors or increase the protective factors or prevent the worst consequences of this health problem. Again, bullet points are enough here -- you don't have to have a fully-developed idea yet.
10. What evidence do you have that your approach would work? Do you have examples of similar programs or policies that work? If you don't have much evidence yet, how will you find it?
