Read this excerpt from James Monroe, outlining the joint policy promoted by Monroe and his Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams.
In a write-up, address the following three tasks:
A. Find the standout line in this primary source. What -- to you -- is the most important sentence? Write this sentence as a direct quote.
B. Translate this document into today's language. Go through the whole thing and rewrite it so that you can comfortably understand it. You can use formal or informal language, but do cover the entire document. (This may be harder than it seems because he wrote this in the 1820s and you're attempting to give it a 2023 linguistic update. You're welcome.)
C. List any questions that you have about this document. This could be as simple as questions around sticking points or phrases he used... and/or questions about the history he mentioned. (What did he mean by____? or Monroe kept mentioning Spain and Portugal. Why? What was happening there and why was it a big deal?)
