Assignment - Oceanic Lithosphere Discussion
1) Why does oceanic lithosphere subduct while continental lithosphere does not ever subduct?
2) Could one earthquake cause California to fall into the ocean as depicted in movies like "San Andreas" or "2012" or "10.0 Earthquake"? Discuss your answer in light of what you have learned both about earthquakes and about plate tectonics.
3) List and briefly describe 5 different pieces of evidence that support the theory of plate In your answer make sure you describe evidence-actual observations. Do not simply describe the theory or components of the theory itself.
Additional Questions (Handwrite your answers) -
A) Give an example of a place in the world where you would be able to walk or drive over a transform plate boundary, a convergent plate boundary, and a divergent plate boundary. What kind of fault would you expect to find at each location?
B) Draw an ocean-continent convergent plate boundary in side view. Details required: show the layers of the Earth involved and label them with their names (oceanic crust, continental crust, mantle, lithosphere/plate, asthenosphere), arrow showing motion of the plates, the trench, and the volcanic arc (volcanic mountain chain).
C) Draw a divergent plate boundary in side view. Details required: show the layers of the Earth involved and label them with their name (crust, mantle, lithosphere/plate, asthenosphere), arrows showing motion of the plates, and the rift valley.
D) Draw a map view FROM ABOVE (not a side view) of a divergent plate boundary cut by a transform plate boundary at a roughly perpendicular (90°) angle. To symbolize a divergent plate boundary, use two parallel lines and to symbolize a transform plate boundary, use a single line. Put arrows on your diagram that show which way the plates are moving.
