Student affairs professionals must recognize the limitations of resources in a higher education setting. An understanding of the macro-level view of the department and the institution allows student affairs professionals to prioritize how their needs align with the needs of other departments. From this position, student affairs professionals are in a more advantageous position to professionally and persuasively advocate for the student needs at their institution. Part of this process is assessing student needs in order to set priorities that should appropriately influence departmental or institutional goals.

For this assignment, a presentation advocating for a program or event to meet an identified student need. It should address an important campus issue, such as DIVERSITY ON CAMPUS.

Direct the INFORMATION to the institution's vice president responsible for assessing the necessity of each proposed program or event. Assume that he or she has decided that only one issue will be addressed in the next school year, and your goal is to persuade him or her to implement your program or event.

Include the following:

  • Summarize the chosen issue (DIVERSITY ON CAMPUS)
  • Explain your justification for the chosen issue.
  • Prioritize the needs of the department in light of the priorities of the institution .
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of the involved stakeholders as well as the available and needed resources.
  • Provide any facts or data about the issue.
  • Persuasively convey the importance of allocating student affairs resources to the identified student need.
