Privilege Essay:
• Students will write a reflective essay connecting their own growth, understanding, and life experiences to our class discussions surrounding privilege and oppression.
• The paper will be at minimum a full3pages in 12-point Times New Roman, double spaced.
o On average, papers tend to be between 3 and 5 pages, however, please do not go over 7 pages.
• To craft this paper, you will identify multiple ways in which you are systemically privileged or oppressed and how they relate to the access and/or safety you have to things in your life and/or how it differs to the experiences of those with a different level of privilege/oppression in that area (READ: you cannot be both privileged and oppressed within the same system)
• You must identify2 forms of systemic/institutional privilege and 1 form of systemic/institutionaloppression that you hold based on your identities. This means that eachtopic you choose to reflect on is at least 1 page of critical reflection.
o Think of more prevalently discussed forms such as race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, etc., but also, think of less commonly discussed forms as religion, citizenship, monogamy, etc. that we have been mentioning throughoutthe semester.
o Make sure that you are correctly naming the privileges/oppression that you are discussing, identifying what the dominant group is, and what the target group(s) is.
Part of this prompt is about being able to correctly identify these items - I cannot tell you if you are correct or not in the items that you are choosing to write about.
o Refer to the PowerPoints, articles, and documents related to our privilege class days while writing this essay (i.e., Systems of Privilege, Privilege Statements, andUnderstanding Privilege & Oppression).
• Do not just identify where you hold privilege/oppression and then define it. As the educator, these definitions are already known to me. You should be critical in your reflection and how they impact your life.
• This paper is reflective, so it should be written in first personand "I" statements will be used throughout.
o You should be making connections to our class, lessons/activities, and the articles you have been reading. If you are citing an article, use APA citations.
• Papers should be structured using the APA headings in the example below to ensure that each section is clearly identified.
