This forum will get you ready for writing the paper by considering some of the main themes that exist in both Twelfth Night and She's the Man.
Choose one question and write a full paragraph including one quote from the play and one specific detail from the movie (such as a scene, a line of dialogue, an aspect of the set or costumes, a choice of actor, song lyrics, etc.).
1. In each version of the story, does disguise turn out to be liberating and positive or dishonest and hurtful?
2. Does either version really support Viola's right to act like a man, or do they end up supporting traditional roles for women?
3. Why do both versions include seemingly gay male characters such as Antonio, Paul, and Horatio Gold? Are these characters treated with respect or laughed at?
4. Is the romance between Olivia and Viola's brother believable in either version? If not, does that bother you?
5. Does the movie remove the more serious or controversial elements of the play (shipwreck and death, religious persecution, homosexual subtexts) to appeal to younger viewers? If so, do you think that's appropriate?
6. Is the movie a good modern version of Twelfth Night? Does it capture the most important aspects of the play? Do you think teenagers miss out by not reading the play itself?
