Capstone Project

OVERVIEW

This capstone project requires you to summarize, synthesize, and build upon course work in your undergraduate major area, resulting in a substantial research project. The entire course is designed as a step-by-step process in the formulation of a two-part capstone project consisting of an academic research paper and oral presentation. By completing this project, you will demonstrate your achievement of the learning outcomes associated with the Bachelor of Arts degree.

GENERAL PLAN
Each module outlined in the course is designed to help you develop the sections of your capstone project.

Module 1 requires you to identify a main topic. The academic research paper must be on a topic you have chosen to explore within your major area of study. In this module, you will identify and introduce the topic, providing reasons for this selection and its relevance to your life. You will also draft a problem statement, preliminary thesis statement, or opening hypothesis to research within the context of your topic.

Module 2 requires you to create an outline of your planned approach to help you think through how you will pursue your capstone project. This outline will not be included in the final capstone project. However, a second part to this assignment includes a narrative section surveying your research strategies, which will be included in the final compilation of your capstone project.

Module 3 is a review of the literature, strategically placed here in the course to allow you more time to do the necessary research. Your literature review is expected to cite at least 10 strong academic sources. However, you are expected to have at least 15 sources referenced in your final deliverable. The literature review seeks to contextualize your topic in the relevant literature and demonstrate the breadth of your own knowledge.

Module 4 is the last section of your final written project, comprised of your discussions and conclusions. This is where you will analyze and interpret the arguments you have found in the literature and evaluate the significant theories and concepts related to your topic. This is the culmination of your research and requires you to show what you have learned and how your own informed critical analysis sheds light on the topic you have been studying.

Module 5 focuses on the oral presentation in which you will create, upload, and post an 8- to 10-minute video to share with classmates through a discussion forum. You will also submit this oral presentation for a grade by the end of the course. All requirements for this oral presentation portion of the capstone project are outlined below.

Module 6 is the conclusion of the course. You will compile and submit your final written academic research paper in standard academic format. All requirements for this written portion of the capstone project are outlined below.

INSTRUCTIONS

Academic Research Paper

The body of the paper should be 25-40 double-spaced pages, not including title page, abstract, table of contents, annotated bibliography, list of tables, or appendices. Your final submission must include the following:

• Title Page
• Abstract
• Table of Contents
• List of Tables and Figures (if applicable)
• Introduction
• Research Strategies
• A Review of the Literature
• Discussions and Conclusions
• Annotated Bibliography (All sources referenced in the paper should be listed and annotated in the bibliography.)
• Appendices (if applicable)

Note: Be sure to follow the appropriate format related to your discipline, either APA (American Psychological Association) or MLA (Modern Language Association) format.

Oral Presentation

You are required to develop a recorded video presentation (8 to 10 minutes) on the goals, achievements, and conclusions of the capstone project. You should provide a thorough discussion and analysis, indicating the interpretations of your findings and what you learned when completing this project. This presentation will showcase your oral communication skills, so pay special attention to how you communicate your thoughts. Your presentation should be well organized, compelling, credible, and polished.

In particular:

• Develop a clear introduction, body, and conclusion, with transitions that make the presentation consistent and cohesive. The end of your presentation should be impactful and relevant.
• Make your central message memorable by stating it precisely, repeating it as needed, and supporting it strongly throughout your presentation.
• Establish your authority by including a variety of supporting information, such as examples, illustrations, statistics, analogies, or quotations.
• Use language that is imaginative, enhances the presentation, and is appropriate to the audience.
• Exude confidence by using good posture, eye contact, gestures, and vocal expressiveness.

Guidelines
1. Review the following articles to help you prepare for your presentation:

• Making Better PowerPoint Presentations
• Oral Presentation Tips
• Oral Presentation [Handout]

2. Use PowerPoint as a visual aid. This aids in the audience's understanding and influence of the information you are presenting. Specifically, you are encouraged to practice and write out a script or prepare slide notes so you have a good flow to your presentation. Since you are recording your presentation in a video format (not performing it live), you may want to anticipate possible questions and try to incorporate answers to those questions into your presentation, if possible.

3. Your presentation should include 12 to 15 slides. You will be graded on the effective design of your slides and presentation of the content. Your presentation should be impactful and interesting, keeping your audience's attention. Be sure to include graphic elements such as charts or graphs. Your design should be bold and compelling. Be consistent with fonts, colors, and stylistic choices. Simple is better than cluttered.

4. Record a video of yourself presenting the slides. Throughout the video, the audio should be clear and your oral delivery of the presentation should appear polished. Delivery techniques (posture, gesture, eye contact, and vocal expressiveness) make the presentation interesting and you should appear comfortable. Be sure to discuss why this topic is important, perhaps by way of an illustration, news item, story, or personal allusion. Make thoughtful language choices that support the effectiveness of the presentation and are appropriate to the audience. Act as a guide on a tour of your topic, sharing interesting information and visuals. Be sure to close the presentation with what you want your viewer to take away from it all. Include what you've learned, why it's impactful, and how it can make a difference in the world. Make it relevant!

You must use the Kaltura Capture tool to record your presentation. To do this, you will record your desktop and webcam simultaneously. Present your PowerPoint on your desktop while delivering your presentation to the webcam. For assistance on how to create a video using Kaltura Capture, be sure to visit: Using Video Tools in Moodle.

Note: You will post your video presentation to the discussion forum in Module 5, allowing classmates the opportunity to view and comment on your video. The presentation will be graded on both form and content, so it is expected that you will develop interesting visuals to enhance the presentation. You will also have an opportunity to take feedback provided from classmates and update your video before submitting it for a grade at the end of the course.

Submit the capstone project (academic research paper and oral presentation) to your mentor for grading. Consult the Course Calendar for due dates.
