Research and draw a diagram showing a food chain with at least four levels of organisms, starting with plants or algae (producers). Show how each organism in your diagram gets energy, and use arrows and labels to indicate the relationship between each of the organisms. Research the average daily calories each organism on your food chain must consume in order to maintain proper body function. While this diagram is called a food chain, it should actually be called a food cycle because you'll include a decomposer to tie the animal at the top of the food chain back to the producers. Along with the diagram, type a three-paragraph explanation of why energy transfer is not 100% efficient in a food chain. Explain where the lost energy goes, and include a paragraph at the end that explains the role of decomposers such as fungi and bacteria. How do they increase entropy to the maximum? Finally, explain how producers (the plants and algae) decrease entropy as the cycle starts over again. In your explanation, include definitions of the second law of thermodynamics and entropy.
