Bringing an image into clear focus is a series of steps that changes the distance between the lens and the specimen on the slide. The goal is to find the sharpest image so you can study the details of the specimen at appropriate magnification. Figure 2.3 clearly shows why it is important to begin the process with the scanning lens in place. This is the only position that you are sure will not actually push the lens through your slide. Obtain a letter 'e' slide and follow the steps below to practice focusing. Materials Compound light microscope Letter 'e' slide Lens paper Method
1. Pug in your microscope and turn on the light. Use course adjustment knob to lower your stage all the way down. This makes it easier to place your slide into the clips of the stage.
2. Rotate nosepiece to put scanning lens in place.
3. Place slide on stage and secure it with slide clips.
NOTE: always handle the slide from its edges, do not touch the slide in the center where the specimen is located. Also remember the coverslip side of the slide whould be facing up and the label on the slide should be.
