Assessment Task: Learning Activities for Reading and Viewing
Case Scenario:
You are going to develop three lesson plans to teach Year 5/6 students reading or viewing of written literature and its multimodal digital adaptation.
The learning intention of these lessons is that Year 5/6 students will be able to:
- Critically comprehend some characterisation strategies in written and multimodal literature, and some linguistic, visual and/or sound resources that can be used to show this characterisation.
For your lesson plans, you will draw on Coraline by Neil Gaiman. You will use both the novella and its filmic adaptation. Each version of Coraline can be accessed through the Reading List in Canvas.
Lesson plans
Question 1: Select one situation involving a protagonist, such as Coraline, in the novella and its comparable scene in the film. Attach the selected excerpt in the Appendix. Question 2. Identify examples of language, visual and sound resources within your selected excerpts that you will draw upon in your lessons to illustrate the expression of the character's Speech, Thoughts, Emotions, Actions and/or Looks as one indirect characterisation strategy. Specify these examples in the Appendix. Your examples and excerpts will not count toward the word count.
Question 3. Provide detailed plans for three lessons using the template provided. At least one lesson plan should focus on the novella, drawing upon your selected language resources for characterisation, and at least one lesson plan should focus on the film, drawing upon either your selected sound or your selected visual resources for characterisation. Each lesson plan should be maximum 2 pages long using the template provided.
Your lesson plans should include:
• One lesson BEFORE reading or viewing;
• One lesson DURING reading or viewing;
• One lesson AFTER reading or viewing.
Each lesson needs to include activity sequences, specific formative assessment and differentiation activities for student diversity. The lessons do not include homework.
