Part 1: Learn More About Pathogens in Food & Water

We hear quite frequently of food contaminated by bacteria, parasites or toxins. Select three bacteria or viruses, parasites, OR toxins to research in more depth. Using your text and the CDC website, respond to the following questions:

What is the name of the pathogen?

What type of food sources is it usually found in?

What are the symptoms of infection?

What is the prognosis? 

How is it treated?

Using your text and the resources provided for this module, discuss four specific things you can do to increase the safety of the foods you eat.

Make sure you are specific and that you personalize this to yourself. For example, I eat a lot of salads, so one meaningful thing I could do to decrease my chances of acquiring a foodborne illness is to thoroughly rinse the lettuce and vegetables with water prior to eating them.
