Question

Leadership style is the way a leader directs, motivates, and implements people and plans (Gashaye, et al., 2023). The leadership theory that most aligns with my philosophy and relates to my practice is Authentic Leadership. This theory resonates with me because it is characterized by self-awareness, internalized moral perspective, balanced processing of information, and relational transparency (Fan, et al., 2024). I lead by modeling vulnerability, honesty, authenticity, and high ethical standards thus promoting employees' authenticity, enhancing trust, and promoting voice behavior which can be used as a way for members to participate in organizational decision-making (Fan, et al., 2023). As a primary care provider, I utilize this theory daily at the microsystem level with how I practice and work alongside the medical assistants in my practice. There is a mutual trust and understanding of roles and responsibilities for myself and my designated medical assistant. We have worked together for almost two years, and I have cultivated an environment that allows her to feel comfortable bringing concerns or problems to my attention without fear of being considered insubordinate. For example, it came to my attention that multiple blood pressure readings that were input into our EMR were out of the appropriate range. This in turn led to requests for the blood pressure to be rechecked which lengthened patient wait times and caused unnecessary delays.
