Leadership Self-Assessment Journal and the Leadership Cumulative Paper

An important piece of leadership development is self-reflection. The purpose of self-study points out your leadership qualities and skills, while at the same time shows individuals the leadership areas in need of improvement. Improving your leadership or becoming a future leader requires participants to think critically of future leadership expectations and to reflect on previous experiences. This gives an individual the opportunity to understand the meaning of current and past leadership behaviors.

Your Leadership Self-Assessment Journal is a record of your knowledge and experiences. These documents summarize and focus on your leadership work and your reflection of that work. The journal serves as a leadership gauge, or thermometer, revealing your leadership progress, efforts, achievements, and your initiative for continued development. The journal includes selected textbook self-assessments from each chapter throughout the term. After digesting the information in your textbook, and completing the assigned self-assessments, your leadership personality should be apparent. The assessments will be interesting and provide you with feedback on your behaviors as a leader.

The design of the self-assessments facilitate reflection on the textbook topic, and (or) your own experiences pertaining to the same topic. In your journal, you identify your leadership style and behaviors in terms of strengths and weaknesses, key elements of your leadership approach, your talent to create an environment to motivate others, how your leadership establishes effective communications, your approach to team building, your ability to address diversity issues, and how you would lead organizational change.

Why complete a Leadership Self-Assessment Journal?

There are several reasons why a Leadership Assessment Journal is valuable:

1. The LSA Journal will demonstrate concrete examples of your leadership competencies

2. This method of journaling helps you gain personal knowledge on how their personality affects your leadership attributes and follower behavior.

3. The journal can prepare you for any future employment interview. Most employers seek individuals possessing strong leadership skills; you will have the ability to point out your own attributes.

4. You gain an understanding of how you can be motivated to operate as a leader in the real world.
