Leadership requires flexibility, adaptability, and versatility. Situational leadership simply explains how a leader must adjust to specific situations regardless of their primary leadership style (Holsinger, 2018). Approaching different situations using the same style will most likely fail, as the one-size-fits-all approach will not work. Situational leadership is critical for public health, as it allows the leaders flexibility to tailor their approach to meet the needs of the team and/or community served. Kotter (2013) argues that situational leadership leads to leaders being more prepared to handle changes because of their ability to easily adapt. COVID taught us how important situational leadership is within public health! Leadership looked quite different during the height of the pandemic. Regardless of one's position prior to COVID, an "all hands on deck" approach was needed to ensure quick decision-making abilities were available with the hope of an effective outcome. Utilizing situational leadership allowed the public to benefit greatly during that time and may have saved many lives as a result.
