Report: Leadership in Operational and Discovery Analytics Projects

Assessment Description: Imagine you will be managing two projects - one operational project (given below) and one innovative discovery analytics project (that you will find yourself). You need to write a report and deliver a presentation addressing and comparing both projects set up using the criteria outlined.

Part 1 - Written Case Study

PART A - Operational Project

You have been provided with an operational project looking at adding a new Formula 1 Grand Prix event to the Formula 1 calendar. Before you start the project, you have been asked to assess the project including leadership, risk and methodology

PART B - Discovery Analytics Project
Discovery analytics projects are those in which participants are trying to gain new insight, create completely new ways of doing things or make improvements using data and analytics techniques. You are to research analytics projects and case studies on the internet. Use these as inspiration to find a similar unique project of your own, and then answer the questions in relation to your innovation analytics project.

PART C - Reflection, Structure and Referencing

Reflect upon the similarities and differences of the projects discussed in Parts A and B. Present your report clearly with particular attention to formats, flow, research, and referencing.

Part 2 - Video Presentation
You will deliver a 5-minute presentation outlining your personal reflection on the differences and similarities of the projects written about in Parts 1A and 1B.

PART A - Operational Project - 10 Marks (500 Words) Formula 1 Grand Prix: Where to next
The popularity of Formula 1 Grand Prix has increased dramatically over the past decade. The increased popularity has seen many new circuits and events added the F1 calendar in recent years including Bahrain, Jeddah, Miami and Las Vegas.

Suppose there has been a new F1 Grand Prix licence given to a new city (of your choice) and you have been asked to manage the creation of this enterprise from the building of a circuit to the race day experience. The new circuit is due to have its first race in 2025.

Before you embark on the main project, assess the following aspects and set up of the project:

Operational Project:

Outline the scope of the project
Evaluate your natural leadership style and how you will use it to lead the project
Suggest a project management methodology and integrate it with the leadership style
Estimate the budget of project
Describe how you would assess the project risk using predictive project analytics (PPA)
Evaluate possible human resources involved, and associated factors, e.g. workstyles, training & cultural fit

PART B - Discovery Analytics Project
Find a discovery analytics project inspired by case studies
on the internet. Ideas for Discovery Analytics Projects:

Discovery Analytics Project based on a similar analytics innovation case study project of your choice:

Introduce the project in your own words
Describe how you would assess the project risk using predictive project analytics (PPA)
Explain how you would justify the running of this innovation project, e.g. the final outcomes would be of benefit to society, etc.
Choose an optimal leadership type for the project
Suggest a project management methodology and integrate it with the leadership type
Estimate the budget of project, and why such an estimation may be difficult given the nature of innovation
Describe the best team roles for undertaking the project, and include one that would add more diversity to the team
Explain how you would democratise the project across the business

Find at least five references for this section to support your idea. Use Harvard referencing with regard to including these references in your report. The KBS referencing guide is on MyKBS.

PART C - Reflection, Structure and Referencing

Compare the two projects from Part A and B in terms of, but not limited to, Characteristics, Project Methodologies, Human Resource Requirements and Optimal Leadership Styles. Draw conclusions about how running these two projects would differ.

Present your report clearly with particular attention to formats, flow, research, and referencing.

PART 2 - Video Presentation

You are required to prepare and deliver a 5-minute presentation using Zoom and upload this to Kaltura. Instructions on uploading the video into Kaltura will be available in the subject portal page.

You will deliver a 5-minute presentation outlining your personal reflection on the differences and similarities of the projects written about in Parts 1A and 1B.

The presentation should cover the following:

What is your personal reflection on the differences between setting up the Discovery and Operational projects specifically discussed in Parts 1A and 1B.
Why are there differences between the methodologies used in the specific projects
What are the specific characteristics that require different applications
What are the benefits and issues associated with both project methodologies
What are the similarities between the methodologies of the specific projects outlined in Parts 1A and 1B
Demonstrate application of the class concepts to the specific projects outlined in Parts 1A and 1B.
Cover other areas you feel are relevant and important The video should include the following:
A clear introduction stating the business problem
Provide a clear conclusions
The video will last 5 minutes with no cuts - imagine this is a live presentation
The video will show you presenting a set of PowerPoint slides and a clear video image of you presenting the material
The presentation contains novel ideas, is well thought out, flows well and is interesting to the observer
