1. Leadership have many definitions. According to our weekly readings, leadership is when someone in charge motivates others to achieve goals. Leadership requires a set of skills that can be learned, as well as some that cannot be learned (Lumen Learning, N.d). Leaders inspire, challenge, and encourage others to push themselves to be great and achieve their goals. Leaders seek to bring out the best in their teams, organizations and societies (Lumen Learning, N.d). Leading and managing have several traits in common. Leading influences the team, managing directs the team. Leaders engage the team by having the same vision and effectiveness. On the other hand managers focuses on the task at hand and employee performance and efficiency (Lumen Learning, N.d).
2. The Transformational leadership style would work best for the new Director and division. The new director should have integrity, motivate their team and set goals. Transformational leaders get the team to look beyond their self-interest, encourages the team, has high expectations and us a model of integrity and fairness (Mind Tools, N.d). Transformational leaders are on a mission to effect positive change for both the organization and the team. Transformational leaders are described as charismatic, enthusiastic, optimistic, passionate and visionary, giving them the ability to change perceptions and beliefs (Hein, 2013). These traits can spread to those around them and when they do, leaders and workers can engage effectively allowing transformation to take place (Hein, 2013).
3. The new director can put Biotech mission and vision front and center of the division. The director can hire employees based on the vision and mission direction of the company. Building a workforce that lives and works by the company mission would put Biotech one step closer to accomplishing their goals. Also having one on one conversations can give the director the opportunity to transmit the vision and mission, receive feedback, build support and create energy around the vision and mission.
