When Serena Martinez arrived in Mexico to take charge of the manufacturing plant her American-owned company, General Motors (GM) had just opened, she expected to settle in quickly. Although she grew up in Georgia, her parents were born in Mexico, so she knew the culture and spoke the language well. She has been highly successful managing US based teams for her company. Yet six months into her new job, she was still struggling to supervise her team in Mexico, and she wasn't sure what she was doing wrong? Serena prided herself on her participative and democratic style of leadership and she was surprised that she wasn't getting the results she wanted. Some of the complaints of her team in Mexico expressed were that they felt she didn't know what she was doing and that she was too indecisive. They also felt that she wasn't effective at communicating what she wanted, and that they didn't know what was expected of them as team players. They also expressed that she was not an effective leader. Based on the unsatisfactory performance of the plant, General Motors felt that it was best to hire Global HR Consultants to design a Cross Cultural Training Program for new site managers based in the Mexico to ensure that they get the results that they wanted. Each team will prepare a Facilitator's manual for their Cross-Cultural Training Program.
