Instructions on Assessment:
For your Advanced Project (AP) research study, you will be supported through supervisory guidance but will work as an independent researcher. Assessment of the AP Research Project module is designed for students to think back on what they have learnt, to recognize their achievements and to identify the challenges that they faced throughout their independent self-discovery research process. The assessment of this module gives students an opportunity to describe their research strategy, process, and what they learnt from it. You will be encouraged to critically engage with knowledge discovery, and to reflect on your educational development in the context of the challenges posed through your research work. The assessment consists of a Reflective Individual Report (3000 words). This will be achieved through the completion of the following tasks:
Section 1- The Reflective Individual Report
Finding a research topic: approx 500 words.
In this task identify your topic and explain how you crafted your research project, selected research tools and search techniques, and which Library collections did you explore.
Areas which can be covered include:
• What is your chosen research topic?
• How and why did you choose it?
• What is your research aims and objectives?
• What specific techniques and strategies did you use for finding relevant information?
• What specific library search tools did you use and why?
• What did you learn about finding information on your topic or in your discipline?
• Was it necessary to move outside your discipline to find sufficient sources?
• Any discussions and recommendations with your supervisor in this context.
2 Professional Activities: approx 500 words.
In this task you have to show a reflection on a wide range of professional research development activities and responsibilities, through your own self-discovery process as well as with your supervisor's guidance, supported by examples.
Areas which can be covered include:
• Student's research tasks and schedule including for example a Gantt Chart.
• Any discussions with your supervisor
• How do you fit in the independent researcher role
• How did you manage your time
• Any challenges you faced and how did you tackle them
• Handling supervisor's comments and development skills
3 Literature Review: This is worth 30% of overall marks - approx 1500 words.
This task brings together the main themes of the module and requires you to build a portfolio from your literature collections.
Areas which can be covered include:
• A mind map of your research topic
• What tools and resources did you use to develop the mind map
• A brief summary of your literature review with proper citation
• What resources and techniques did you use to write your literature review.
• Did you have any reason for not selecting specific resources, even though they appeared promising?
• What is your research method and what are the practical steps you used to complete your research.
• Comment on the feasibility of your chosen method including challenges and recommendations
4- Reflection of Research Project: This is worth 20% of overall marks - approx 500 words.
Here is your opportunity to bring your achievements and contributions in a portfolio of the work done in a professional manner and reflect upon the relevance of the various activities. Summarise how you have reflected on your learning and development whilst on research project. Demonstrate awareness of your personal strengths and weaknesses and the ability to adapt to the independent research process and how you would engage further in continuing self-development.
Areas which can be covered include:
• What was your key achievements during this research?
• What did you learn about your own research process and style?
• What expertise have you gained as a researcher?
• What do you still need to learn?
• What would you change about your process if you had another chance?
• Any recommendations
Section 2 - Presentation of your research:
The poster should outline your research activities with interesting commentary about what you learned along the way. It should be a balance of visuals and text. To design your poster, you should consider the following:
• What is the most important/interesting finding from my research project?
• How can I visually share my research? Should I use charts, graphs, photos, images?
• What kind of information can I convey during my lightning talk that will complement my poster?
