1. Tectonic plates are large segments of the earth's crust that move slowly. Suppose one such plate has an average speed of 5.0 cm per year.

(a)  What distance does it move in 65 seconds at this speed?

(b) 1 year = 1 year * 365 days/1 year * 24 hours/1 day * 60 minutes/1 hour * 60 seconds/1 minute = 31536000 seconds

Distance covered = speed * time

= 5.0/31536000 * 65

= 1.030568239 x 10-4 cm

= 1.03056824 × 10-6 m

1.03x10^-6m

(b) What is its speed in miles per million years?
